Health Insurance covers your expenses when you are "Hospitalised" for a minimum of 24hrs. This has to be doctor recommended. 

The insurance companies have a list of hospitals which provide you cashless experience. It means you DON'T have to PAY when you get admitted in these hospitals. Any other hospital and you'll have to pay first and take money from the Insurance Company later. This takes about 45 days. Generally consider about 5% less payment from the Insurance Company as some things like gloves, injections, adult diapers, etc (called consumables) are not covered under Health Insurance.

There are other things like "room rent capping", "Co-Pay" which you can ask your advisor about.

Obviously many T&C apply, but the terms are broadly made to protect the customer. Insurance companies in India generally have a loss ratio close to 100% i.e. they spend as much as money on health insurance claims as much they earn in Premium. So almost all health insurance companies will *not* try to cheat you in anyway.

Why would they? We as a society don't profit off the sick. We pool together money so that when one of us needs it, all of us pay. Health Insurance is one of the greatest invention of mankind. Let us make India a 100% health insurance covered society!
